STARS IN GOD’S SKY - By Faith Cook - Published by Evangelical Press - Price: £8.95 William Carey is reported to have said ‘Attempt great things for God; expect great things from God’. This could summarise Stars in God’s Sky as it depicts the efforts of various ordinary Christians to serve their Lord and the results that came from their labours. Whether it was the writing of hymns, the writing of a reliable account of the martyrdom of God’s people for the benefit of future generations, the preaching of the gospel to the ones, the twos or the masses, or the training up of missionaries, Faith Cook shows us that God takes ordinary people to accomplish remarkable things for Him. Many of those mentioned in the book will probably be unknown to most of us, which is one of the beauties of the book. Faith Cook shows that God is able to save all kinds of people from different backgrounds and in various circumstances and use them for His service. God’s work isn’t always advanced by the really well known preachers and missionaries and ‘Heroes of the Faith’ but is often done through ordinary people the world, and indeed the church at large, knows little about. In other words, people like us!! The author also shows that often our work may simply be the influence we have on others, who then go on to do great things for the Lord. For example, who would have thought the person who had most influence over John Bunyan and hence The Pilgrim’s Progress would have been a drunken, hard-hearted convict who escaped the hangman’s noose the night before his execution. Yet, John Gifford was such a man who was wonderfully converted and would become Bunyan’s pastor in Bedford. The book is heart-warming and at times heart-wrenching, challenging and encouraging which made it hard to put down.
LISTEN UP! - by Christopher Ash - Published by The Good Book Company - Price: £1.50 Have you heard a good sermon recently? No! Was it because the sermon was boring, too long and irrelevant? Or was the problem you? Christopher Ash has written a timely and helpful booklet on how to listen to a sermon. It is divided up into 7 short sections that help the reader to have a good and proper attitude towards hearing the Bible being read and preached. He emphasises the importance of coming to church regularly together to hear sermons rather than staying at home listening to sermons from the internet. This should never be a substitute for sitting under the Word of God in your local church. He says that if we are to benefit from a sermon, even if the preacher is not the best, we must be praying and preparing our own hearts before we hear the sermon. He suggests that we need to come to church expecting God to speak to us and humbly submit to all that God teaches us and he recommends that we cultivate a ‘Berean’ attitude where we study the passage that has been taught to see if what the preacher said came from the Scriptures or was just his own ideas. After each section there are some practical suggestions on how we can do something to help ourselves benefit from hearing sermons. Preachers and hearers alike will profit from reading this booklet. Next time you come out of church moaning about the preacher and the sermon, perhaps you need to take a closer look at yourself first!
